DDP vs DAP: Who Pays Duties and Which Incoterm Is Right for Your Import? (2026)

DDP and DAP are almost identical. One difference changes your cost, your risk, and your workload, and in 2026 that difference got more expensive. Here is exactly what it is and how to choose.

No obligation to accept · 4–6 binding bids on completed auctions · Median time to first bid: 3–4 hours

Quick answer

DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) and DAP (Delivered at Place) cover the same route, the same carrier, and the same destination. The only difference is who clears import customs and pays duties and taxes: under DDP that sits on the selling side and arrives inside one price; under DAP it sits with you, the buyer, and arrives as separate bills from a customs broker. Since July 24, 2026 most China-origin goods carry an additional 12.5% Section 301 duty line, so the bill that DAP hands you is larger than it was in February. For most e-commerce sellers importing from China without their own broker and bond, DDP is simpler and more predictable; DAP makes sense once you run your own customs setup and want direct control of classification. On AiDeliv, pre-vetted carriers bid on the full DDP scope, so the number you compare is the number you pay.
Section 01Definitions

What Does DAP Mean and How Is It Different from DDP?

DAP stands for Delivered at Place. It is one of the 11 Incoterms 2020 rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). Under DAP, the seller delivers goods to the buyer's named destination, ready for unloading, and the buyer is responsible for import customs clearance, import duties, and taxes. Under DDP (Delivered Duty Paid), the seller delivers to the same named place with import clearance, duties, and taxes already handled.

Both terms allocate obligations between the seller and the buyer in the sales contract. In a marketplace shipment on AiDeliv, the seller-side DDP scope is executed by the carrier or forwarder whose bid you accept, through its own customs broker and importer-of-record structure; you receive one invoice with one number. Under DAP, the operating party delivers to your named place and stops there: you need a U.S. customs broker, a customs bond where required, and you receive a separate bill for duties.

For the full standalone definition of DAP, including the A1–A10 and B1–B10 obligations, see the DAP entry in our Incoterms glossary. For what a DDP price covers and who the importer of record is, see our DDP shipping guide.

Section 02Side by side

DDP vs DAP: Side-by-Side Comparison

DDP and DAP compared on the points that change your cost and workload
9 rows · 3 columns
DDP DAP
Full name Delivered Duty Paid Delivered at Place
Freight to the named place Seller side Seller side
Export clearance Seller side Seller side
Import customs clearance Seller side Buyer
Import duties and taxes Seller side, inside the price Buyer, billed separately
Risk transfer point Named place, ready for unloading Named place, ready for unloading
Number of invoices One Several (freight, duty, broker, fees)
Predictability High: total known before pickup Lower: the duty bill depends on classification at entry
Best for Sellers without their own customs setup Sellers with their own broker and bond
Key takeaway

DDP gives you one price. DAP gives you a lower freight quote plus a separate customs and duty bill that you manage yourself.

Section 03Who pays

Who Pays Freight, Duties, and Customs Under Each Term

Under DAP, the seller side pays freight from origin to the named destination and handles export clearance in the origin country. The buyer pays for import customs clearance, import duties, and all applicable taxes at destination. This split creates a common source of confusion: the DAP freight quote looks lower than DDP because it excludes duties and customs fees, but those costs still exist. You pay them separately, often with less visibility into the total until after the shipment arrives.

Cost components by Incoterm; the U.S. entry lines are the ones that move
10 rows · 3 columns
Cost component DDP DAP
Origin pickup Seller side Seller side
Export clearance Seller side Seller side
Ocean or air freight Seller side Seller side
Destination delivery to the named place Seller side Seller side
Import customs clearance Seller side Buyer
Import duties and taxes (including the 12.5% line on China-origin goods since July 24, 2026) Seller side Buyer
Customs brokerage fee Seller side Buyer
ISF filing (USA, ocean) Seller side Buyer's side as ISF importer
Customs bond (USA) Seller side Buyer
Merchandise Processing Fee and Harbor Maintenance Fee Seller side Buyer

One structural point explains why DAP is harder than it looks for a first-time importer: a nonresident importer can make entry only after appointing a U.S. resident agent and posting a customs bond (19 CFR 141.18), and every importer of record needs an importer identification number. Under DDP, the operating party's IOR structure carries that setup.

Section 04Cost comparison

Real Cost Comparison: DDP vs DAP on the 2026 Duty Stack

The same shipment under both terms, priced on the worked example from our DDP cost guide, which owns the figures for this cluster: plastic kitchen organizers, 6 CBM ocean LCL, Shenzhen to Los Angeles, $15,000 declared value, illustrative duty rate 40.9% (general rate plus Section 301 list rate 28.4%, plus the 12.5% Section 301 forced-labor line in force since July 24, 2026). Verify your product's exact HS code; a different classification rewrites this table.

DDP vs DAP, same shipment; figures cited from the DDP cost guide (Example 2) and its destination-charges table, September 2026
10 rows · 3 columns
Cost line DDP DAP
Origin charges inside the price $150
Ocean LCL freight (6 CBM) inside the price $690
Port and handling inside the price $100
Final delivery to the named place inside the price $300
DAP quote (freight side) – $1,240
Import duties ($15,000 x 40.9%, illustrative) inside the price $6,135
MPF (0.3464%) and HMF (0.125%) inside the price $70.71
Customs broker fee inside the price $150–300 per entry
ISF filing and customs bond inside the price varies by provider and bond type
Total $7,625.71 $7,595.71–7,745.71, before ISF and bond

On these figures DAP lands between $30 below and $120 above the DDP total before you add the ISF filing fee, the bond, and your own hours coordinating with the broker. What the table cannot show: the risk that your broker classifies the product differently and the duty amount moves, and the fact that under DAP the 12.5% line arrives on an invoice after the cargo has landed, while under DDP it was inside the number you approved before pickup.

Key takeaway

DAP looks cheaper on the freight line. When you add everything else, DDP usually costs the same or less, and it always takes less of your time. Reviewed: September 2026.

Section 05DDP vs DDU

DDP vs DDU: What Changed After Incoterms 2010

DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid) was the official Incoterm before 2010. The International Chamber of Commerce replaced DDU with DAP in the Incoterms 2010 revision, and Incoterms 2020 is the current edition. In practice DDU and DAP mean the same thing: the goods are delivered to the named destination, and the buyer pays duties and clears customs.

Some freight forwarders, especially in China, still quote DDU. If you see DDU on a quote, treat it as DAP: the obligations are identical, but DDU has had no formal ICC backing since 2010, so if a dispute arises DAP provides clearer legal standing as the current standard. Ask the forwarder to reissue the quote as DAP, or, if you want the duties inside the price, as DDP.

Section 06DDP vs FOB

DDP vs FOB: Two Different Levels of Control

FOB (Free on Board) is an Incoterms 2020 rule for sea and inland waterway transport only. Under FOB the seller's obligation ends when the goods are on board the vessel at the named port of shipment; from there the buyer arranges and pays for ocean freight, the ISF filing, U.S. customs clearance, duties, and delivery. DDP is the opposite end of the spectrum: door delivery with import costs handled.

The FOB quote looks lower because it covers only the leg to the ship. When you add freight, customs brokerage, the duty stack, ISF filing, drayage, and delivery, the total is often similar to or higher than a DDP price, and every one of those lines is a separate invoice you coordinate. FOB earns its place when you have your own broker, your own bond, and enough volume to negotiate ocean freight directly; then control over routing and classification is worth the workload. First-time and small importers usually start with DDP and move toward FOB as volume and customs expertise grow.

Section 07DDP vs EXW

DDP vs EXW: Full Seller Control vs Minimum Seller Responsibility

EXW (Ex Works) is the minimum-obligation Incoterm for the seller: the goods are made available at the seller's premises, and the buyer handles everything from loading onward, including export clearance in China. DDP is the maximum-obligation term: the selling side delivers to your door with import formalities and duties handled.

EXW is attractive on paper because the unit price is the lowest the supplier will quote. In practice a foreign buyer cannot usually perform Chinese export formalities itself, so EXW means appointing an origin agent, paying origin charges separately, and carrying every downstream cost and risk from the factory gate. It suits importers with an established origin-side operation. For everyone else, the clean structure is to buy FOB or EXW from the supplier and buy DDP-scope door-to-door delivery from a carrier, so the logistics leg carries one price and one responsible party.

Section 08Amazon FBA

DDP vs DAP for Amazon FBA Sellers

Amazon does not act as importer of record, does not clear customs for third-party sellers, and does not pay duties on your behalf. This creates a practical problem for DAP shipments: if customs holds your cargo, your inventory sits at the port, your listing in the Amazon store runs out of stock, and your ranking drops. The cost of a three-day customs delay can exceed any saving DAP offered on the freight line.

Under DDP, the operating party owns the customs process, provides the IOR through its approved structure, resolves customs issues, and delivers to the fulfillment center with the delivery appointment booked. For the complete flow, including FBA prep, appointments, and how a DDP auction compares with Amazon's own inbound programs, see our DDP to Amazon FBA guide.

Key takeaway

For FBA sellers, DDP removes the customs risk that causes stockouts. This alone usually justifies the price difference over DAP.

Section 09Reverse auctions

How Reverse Auctions Change the DDP vs DAP Decision

When you request a DAP or DDP quote from a single freight forwarder, you are negotiating alone. The forwarder sets the price, and you either accept it or spend days collecting quotes from other providers. Your one or two pallets are not enough volume to command attention or a discount.

On AiDeliv the dynamic is different. You post the shipment once with the full DDP scope, and pre-vetted carriers bid on it during a defined window; each bid has to meaningfully beat the one before it. BidBox, the platform's scoring system, analyzes multiple factors to determine which carriers qualify to bid on your lane, and you make the final call: accept, reject, or start a new auction. Carriers bid directly, with no forwarder margin layer in between, and they absorb customs and duties into the DDP price at rates they negotiate across their entire volume rather than at the retail rate you would pay individually. That is why auction prices on the same DDP scope typically come in 15–40% lower than comparable forwarder quotes. On completed AiDeliv auctions, shipments draw 4–6 binding bids, and the median time to first bid is three to four hours.

This changes the comparison itself. The DAP argument is "I can save on the freight line and handle customs myself." Once the DDP price is formed by competition rather than by one company's margin target, the freight-line saving shrinks or disappears, and what remains on the DAP side is the workload and the after-arrival bills.

Carriers maintain cargo coverage of at least $100,000 per shipment as a platform participation requirement, with claims paid on invoice value up to the coverage limit; that is a carrier-level requirement, not shipper insurance, and for high-value cargo we recommend adding Marine Cargo Insurance. For how the auction works step by step, see our Freight Auction Marketplace page.

Section 10When which

When DDP, When DAP (and When Neither)

DDP Is the Right Choice When

  • You import for the first time or occasionally and have no U.S. customs broker, bond, or importer-of-record setup
  • You want one price approved before pickup, with the 2026 duty layers inside it rather than arriving as a separate bill
  • You sell in the Amazon store and cannot afford a customs hold that turns into a stockout
  • Your products are standard, compliant goods with a clear HS classification and no special agency requirements
  • You would rather compare competing bids on the same scope than manage brokers, bonds, and fee invoices yourself

DAP Is the Right Choice When

  • You have an established relationship with a U.S. customs broker who knows your product categories
  • You ship frequently enough, ten or more shipments a year, to justify maintaining your own customs infrastructure
  • You import regulated products (FDA-regulated food, supplements, cosmetics, or CPSC-regulated items) and want direct control over the clearance process
  • You need specific classification strategies or exclusion claims that require working directly with your own broker
  • You hold a continuous bond and prefer to pay duties, MPF, and HMF through your own account

If none of the DAP criteria apply, DDP is the simpler and safer choice. You can switch from DDP to DAP later as your import volume grows and you build customs expertise. FOB and EXW belong to a third case: you run the whole logistics leg yourself, and the comparison is no longer about duties but about control.

Sources and methodology

Incoterms definitions follow the ICC Incoterms 2020 rules and the U.S. International Trade Administration's summary of them. The 2026 duty line on China-origin goods follows USTR's July 2026 Section 301 final action and CBP's CSMS guidance on the end of IEEPA duty collection. Importer-of-record and bond mechanics follow 19 CFR Part 141. All cost figures are cited from our DDP cost guide, the single source of numbers for this cluster, and are illustrative planning figures, not quotes. Platform metrics (bids per shipment, time to first bid) are drawn from completed AiDeliv auctions. Reviewed: September 2026.

Frequently asked questions
01What is the difference between DDP and DAP?
The only difference is who clears import customs and pays duties and taxes. Under DDP (Delivered Duty Paid), that sits on the selling side and arrives inside one price. Under DAP (Delivered at Place), the buyer clears customs and pays duties separately. Everything else, including freight, origin handling, and delivery to the named place, is the same. DDP gives you one price; DAP gives you a lower freight quote plus a separate duty and broker bill.
02What does DAP stand for in shipping?
DAP stands for Delivered at Place. It is one of the 11 Incoterms 2020 rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce. Under DAP, the seller delivers goods to the buyer's named destination, ready for unloading, and handles transport and export clearance. The buyer handles import customs clearance, duties, and taxes.
03Who pays freight under DAP Incoterms?
The seller side pays freight under DAP. The DAP quote covers transport from origin to the named destination, including export clearance. What DAP does not cover: import customs clearance, import duties, taxes, U.S. entry fees, and unloading. Those costs fall on the buyer and arrive as separate invoices.
04Is DDU the same as DAP?
Yes, in practice. DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid) was replaced by DAP (Delivered at Place) in Incoterms 2010, and Incoterms 2020 is the current edition. The obligations are identical: the goods are delivered, and the buyer pays duties. If you see DDU on a quote, treat it as DAP and ask the forwarder to reissue it under the current term.
05Is DDP or DAP cheaper in 2026?
Line by line, DAP shows a lower freight quote. In total, on the worked example in our DDP cost guide, DAP lands within roughly $30 below to $120 above the DDP figure before the ISF filing fee, the bond, and your own time, because the duties, entry fees, and broker fee still have to be paid. The 2026 duty changes made the separate DAP duty bill larger, not smaller. The real advantage of DDP is predictability: you know the total before you ship.
06Under DAP, who pays the 12.5% Section 301 duty on China-origin goods?
The buyer. Since July 24, 2026 most articles of China carry an additional 12.5% Section 301 line on top of the general rate and any list duty. Under DAP it is part of the duty bill your customs broker presents at entry. Under DDP it sits inside the price you approved before pickup, provided the bid treats duties as fixed rather than estimated or passed through at cost, which is one of the checks in our DDP quote checklist.
07Which Incoterm is better for Amazon FBA?
DDP. Amazon does not require a specific Incoterm, but it does not act as importer of record and does not clear customs or pay duties for third-party sellers. Under DAP, a customs hold means a stockout. Under DDP, the operating party handles customs and duties and delivers to the fulfillment center. Our DDP to Amazon FBA guide covers the full flow.
08Who is the Importer of Record under DDP?
In a DDP shipment through AiDeliv, the winning carrier delivers the DDP service and provides an importer of record through its approved structure. AiDeliv operates the technology marketplace but does not act as IOR and does not perform transportation or customs services. Before you accept a bid, ask which legal entity will stand as IOR and which licensed broker files the entry.
09Can I switch from DAP to DDP with my current supplier?
Yes. The Incoterm in your purchase contract with the supplier and the logistics scope you buy from a carrier are two separate agreements. Many importers keep FOB or EXW terms with the supplier and buy DDP-scope door-to-door delivery from a carrier, so the carrier's bid covers freight, U.S. clearance, duties, and delivery. Your supplier ships the goods the same way; what changes is who is responsible after the goods leave the factory.
10What if duties change after my DDP bid is accepted?
It depends on the bid terms, so ask before you accept. A complete DDP bid states whether duties are fixed in the price, estimated, or passed through at cost, and which HS code and declared value it is priced on. The U.S. duty stack on China-origin goods changed three times in 2026, so a bid that is silent on this is a bid that can move. Our DDP quote checklist covers the exact questions.
11Who pays insurance under DDP?
The Incoterm itself does not require the seller to insure the goods under DDP, unlike CIP or CIF. In practice, reputable DDP operators carry cargo coverage. On AiDeliv, cargo coverage at a stated per-shipment minimum is a condition of platform participation, with claims paid on invoice value up to the coverage limit; the figure and how claims work are in our DDP guide. AiDeliv is a marketplace, not an insurer, and for high-value cargo we recommend adding Marine Cargo Insurance.
12What is AiDeliv's role in DDP shipments?
AiDeliv operates a technology marketplace that connects shippers with carriers through reverse auctions. The carrier you select performs the actual DDP delivery, including transportation, customs clearance, and duty payment. AiDeliv provides the platform technology, facilitates communication, and coordinates claims processing on behalf of and for the account of carriers. AiDeliv does not perform transportation or customs services.
